Shabbat Across America & Canada

On Friday night, March 20, 2009, hundreds of synagogues across the continent will take part in a historic national Jewish event to celebrate that which unites all Jews – Shabbat!  Join us, at B’nai Emunah, in creating an evening when tens of thousands of Jews across North America will come together to eat, drink, relax, dance, enjoy, and celebrate.

This outreach program gets widespread participation from congregations big and small.  The one year that we went “all out” for this program, I prepared a dinner that was served after service to members who brought a non-affiliated guest.  It was well received and we were happy to see some new faces around our table.

If you have ever been new to a city and not sure where to attend services, be it for Shabbat or a Yom Tov, you know how important outreach can be.  Nothing beats the feeling of having someone connect with you and offer to have you join them at services or for a Shabbat or holiday meal.

Shabbat Across America/Canada is about reaching out to fellow Jews. As if we had radar, we seem to meet other Jews without even trying, and often that happens at the most unusual places.  Why not ask someone if he/she is interested in coming to Shabbat services with you? Sometimes, people are really hesitant to come into services when they aren’t sure they will know anyone else there.  We are not looking to pressure anyone, but we love exposing others to our warm and caring community.  With Rabbi Mark on the pulpit, our Friday evening services are more innovative and have more to offer, even when we have our regular “traditional” service.  Why not invite someone to join you to meet our new rabbi and stay for a nosh and schmooze?

If you do plan to bring a guest to services on Friday evening, March 20, 2009, please let Alberta or me know.  If we expect a bigger Friday evening congregation than usual, we can plan for an extended Oneg Shabbat in the spirit of Shabbat Across America/Canada.

Reaching out and offering to bring someone to services is a small gesture that can bring huge rewards in many ways.  Mark your calendar for March 20, and ask your friend to join you at B’nai Emunah. Do it now, before you forget!
