From the President: Our "New" New Year

As we approach the High Holy Days, we pause to review the year that has passed and to consider the one that follows. Indeed, the past year has given us much to think about, both individually and as a congregation, and the year that approaches promises to be one of renewed hope, change and innovation.

Reflecting on the past, the two-and-a-half years since Rabbi Ted retired can be likened to the Torah passages we have been reading about wandering in the wilderness. Although our wandering was only metaphorically “in the wilderness,” it did give us cause to become introspective, not unlike our ancestors of old. And as we read about approaching the Promised Land, we as a congregation have indeed reached a pivotal place in our history -- that of working with our first new rabbi in forty years.

Rosh Hashanah, often translated as New Year, always brings thoughts of renewal and of looking forward to the coming year. We at Congregation B’nai Emunah have much to look forward to. Rabbi Mark Melamut brings new energy, spirituality, learning, ruach, and more to our eager community. Already, in just his first month, Rabbi Mark has brought innovations to Shabbat services, teaching to Tisha b’Av, a caring face to the Jewish Home and the congregants convalescing there, and baseball spirit to the CBE group at Jewish Heritage Night at AT&T Park… not to mention Hayley and Kinneret to the community!

And so, as we anticipate the new year, one cannot help but feel, perhaps as our brethren did as they approached the Holy Land, that this will be a truly new new year, filled with exciting challenges, events, and education, shepherded by Rabbi Mark and bound together by the extended family we call B’nai Emunah.

Come join us in this adventure. Shanah tovah!
