What is Tisha b'Av?

Tisha b'Av is frequently referred to as 'the saddest day in Jewish history' because it commemorates a number of unfortunate events that have befallen the Jewish people:

*The destruction of the First and Second Temples
*The failure of Bar Kochba's revolt
*The negative report about Canaan given to the Israelites by Moses' twelve scouts, and other events

What customs are observed on Tisha b'Av?

Like Yom Kippur, Tisha b'Av is a fast day lasting from sunset the previous evening until the following nightfall. There are prohibitions on eating, drinking, bathing, perfume, wearing leather, sexual relations, and displays of affection. As with observance of other fasts, these prohibitions are suspended in favor of health issues.

How will B'nai Emunah be mindful of observing the holiday?

We will have a special Tisha b'Av service in which we will all gather at the bimah and read the book of Eichah (Lamentations) together. Please come join us!
